Roman Marble Basin

An ancient Roman large marble strigillated basin, with roundels in low relief on each side, one with a partridge feeding on berries, the other with a head of Eros with leaves and berries in his hair surrounded with a twelve petal flower; with a spout on the broad rim and ivy leaf handles at each side.

Ca. 3rd – 4th century AD.

Height: 12 in. (30.3 cm); width: 21 in. (53.4 cm).

Formerly in an American private collection: acquired at Sotheby’s, London, July, 9 – 10, 1984, lot 269.
