Sumerian Proto-Cuneiform Tablet
An ancient Mesopotamian clay tablet inscribed in six registers with pictographic proto-cuneiform text likely indicating numbers of livestock and other goods. The reverse depicts an equine, a very rare early representation. Ca. 3100 - 3000 BC. Length: 2 3/4 in. (6.3 cm). cf.: British Museum, inv. no.WA 140852; also, naissance de l'ecriture, (Paris, 1982), nos. 7, 8, 28. Previously in an American private manuscript collection, Akron, Ohio, since the 1980's Formerly in a New York private collection.
