An ancient Apulian Greek Xenon ware sessile kantharos with lateral handles, and painted meander, laurel and chevron bands on the body in applied red.

Apulia, Magna Graecia, South Eastern Italy.
Ca. 330 - 300 BC.
Height: 4 1/4 in. (10.6 cm).
Intact.

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, so named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matte red decoration over black glaze.

Formerly in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
