Egyptian Bronze Amulet of a Cat
An ancient Egyptian bronze amulet of a seated cat on an integral plinth. Late Period, Ca. 700 - 30 BC. Height: 1 3/4 in. (4.3 cm). The female cat was seen as the earthly manifestation of Bastet, goddess of Joy. Her cult center was at Bubastis in the Nile Delta. Here the carefully mummified bodies of highly revered cats have been found in great numbers. cf.: C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, (Texas, 1994), no. 64f.
