Old Babylonian Hematite Cylinder Seal
An ancient Old Babylonian hematite cylinder seal depicting two suppliants in long robes approach a god with scimitar raised and holding a burning torch; behind him an upside down figure likely carved to fill the space reserved for inscription. Old Babylonian Period. Ca. 1900 - 1600 BC. Height: 7/8 in. (2 cm). Intact. In modern gold finger ring mount. Cf. B. Tessier, Ancient Near Eastern Cylinder Seals from the Marcopoli Collection, (Berkeley, 1984), p. 140, cat. no. 118. Formerly in the collection of the renowned Iraqi architect Said Ali Madhloom (1921-2017), brought to the United Kingdom in 1981.
