Egyptian Bronze Head of a Falcon

Egyptian Bronze Head of a Falcon

An ancient Egyptian large cast bronze head of a falcon with curved beak, bold round eyes, the coverts below are recessed to receive gold inlay, traces of which remain.

Late Period, 26th - 30th Dynasty,
Ca. 650 - 350 BC.
Height: 3 1/2 in. (9 cm).
Intact.

The god Horus was strongly associated with the falcon and, as a sky god, with the sun. The falcon was itself revered for its hunting skill. Mummies of falcons and statuettes in stone and bronze were left as votives to Horus.

Formerly in a European private collection, prior to 1983.
