Mesopotamian Marble Eye Idol
An ancient Mesopotamian Tell Brak marble eye idol of schematic form with incised eyes and lines across the chest. Early Uruk Period. Ca. 3500 - 3000 BC. Height: 2 1/2 in (6.1 cm). Intact. At the site of Tell Brak on the Habur tributary of the Euphrates River, thousands of Eye Idols of marble, alabaster, and clay have been excavated at what has come to be known as the Eye Temple. Several other Northern Mesopotamian sites of the late Gawra and Early Uruk period have yielded similar examples. Cf.: M.
