Five Near Eastern Bronze Javelin Blades

Five Near Eastern Bronze Javelin Blades

Five ancient Near Eastern bronze javelin and arrowhead blades, each with a central mid-rib and extended tang.

Ca. 2nd millennium BC.
Maximum length: 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm).

Bronze weapons were first used in the 3rd millennium BC. By the second millennium BC many specialized types of blades had been developed: larger types for lances and spears, smaller types for javelins and arrows. Even after the advent of iron metallurgy in the late second millennium BC in Anatolia, bronze remained in use for weapons as it was easier to produce.

Formerly in a New England private collection.
