Egyptian Amethyst Scarab Gold Ring
An ancient Egyptian carved amethyst scarab, set in the original gold swivel ring with gold granulation around the mount.
New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty,
Ancient Egyptian amethyst was derived from Wadi el Hudi, southeast of Aswan. Amethyst was especially popular in the New Kingdom. Two amethyst scarabs were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun.
Formerly in the collection of Otto Wegener, Berlin, acquired in the late 1950's; subsequently in a New York private collection.
