Attic Red-Figure Nolan Amphora: Ethiop Painter

An ancient Greek Attic red-figure Nolan amphora attributed to the Ethiop painter, depicting a young hoplite wearing a belted chiton, a chlamys draped over his right arm, a shield over his left shoulder and a spear in his right hand. The hoplite appears to be departing from the older bearded man on the left. There is a vertical inscription in red between the figures reading partially, "KONI." On the reverse side is a standing bearded man leaning on a staff.

Height: 11 7/8 in. (30.2 cm).
Intact.

Formerly in an English private collection; Sotheby s London, December 8, 1980, lot 225; subsequently in a Japanese private collection.
