Thasos ca. 480 - 463
Silver stater, 20 mm, 9.19 gm. Obv: Satyr advancing right, carrying off protesting nymph. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square. Ca. 480 - 463 BC. The island of Thasos drew great wealth in antiquity from gold mines. The Satyr and Nymph represent an expression of erotic fantasy in a form considered to be inappropriate for mortal Greeks. This coin type represents a transitional period between simple archaic imagery and later classical style. Le Rider, Thasiennes 5; HGC 6, 331.
