Silver nomos, 21 mm, 7.76 gm. Obv: Nude helmeted warrior on horseback left, with shield and javelin. Rev: Phalanthos, holding helmet, astride dolphin left, TARAS below. Minted in Calabria, 333-330 BC. Tarentum (Taras) was founded in 706 BC by Dorian immigrants from Sparta. It became a commercial power and a sovereign city of Magna Graecia, ruling over the Greek colonies in southern Italy. Acquired from Edward J. Waddell, Ltd., 1989.
