Assyro-Babylonian Chalcedony Stamp Seal
An ancient Mesopotamian Assyro-Babylonian chalcedony stamp seal with a cultic scene. A bearded male figure with raised hands stands before an altar upon which is a couchant mushhushshu, the composite dragon associated in particular with Babylonâ??s chief deity Marduk, whose spade standard rises from its back. Neo-Babylonian. Late 8th - 6th century BC. Height: 7/8 in. (2.2 cm). Cf. Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. no. 93.17.58. Formerly in the collection of Armen Sarkisian, acquired in Egypt in the 1950s.
