Egyptian Faience Offering Cup for Ramesses IV
An ancient Egyptian blue-green faience offering cup bearing a hieroglyphic text in two columns, including the cartouche of the pharaoh Ramesses IV. The text reads: "Ramesses, the Ruler of Justice is Re, beloved of Amun (Ra-msi-sw, HqA-mAat-ra, mri Imn), (beloved of) Osiris, the Lord of Rosetau." New Kingdom, 20th dynasty, reign of Ramesses IV Ca. 1152 - 1145 BC. Height: 2 in. (5.1 cm). Intact. These cups contained the various sacred perfumed oils and unguents that were used in both daily use and funeral ritual, they often were labeled with the contents. Details in the cartouche reveal that the pharaoh in question is Ramesses IV. For this writing of his name see Jurgen von Beckerath, Handbuch der agyptischen Konigsnamen (2nd edition, Mainz am Rhein, Philipp von Zabern, 1999), p. 169, E1. Formerly in the B. H. collection, Seattle; acquired from Galerie Archaeologie, Montreal, 1985.
