Bactrian Carnelian Axe Pendant Necklace
An ancient Bactrian carnelian axe pendant restrung with modern round carnelian beads, silver beads and a clasp. Ca. 6th - 5th century BC. Length: 22 1/4 in. (56.5 cm). Intact and wearable. Bactria was a province of the Persian empire located in present-day northern Afghanistan. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great between 329-327 BC, and after his death became part of the Seleucid Empire. In antiquity, Bactria was famous for its fierce warriors and religion founded by the prophet Zarathustra. Formerly in an Israeli private collection.
