Thasos 500-463 BC
Silver stater, 19 mm, 8.80 gm. Obv: Satyr advancing right, carrying off protesting nymph. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square. Ca. 500 - 463 BC. The island of Thasos drew great wealth in antiquity from gold mines. The Satyr and Nymph represent an expression of erotic fantasy in a form considered to be inappropriate for mortal Greeks. This coin type represents a transitional period between simple archaic imagery and later classical style. SNG Copenhagen 1010.
