Albert Pagnon operated a shop in Luxor to supply provision to tourist boats in 1877. He was also a hotelier. The Egyptian Gazette called him the hotel King of Upper Egypt in his obituary.

Sir Sidney Nolan was one of Australia's leading artists of the 20th century.

Lord Shackleton was a Labour Party politician and the son of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton
