Apulian Red-Figure Lekanis
An ancient Apulian Greek red-figure lidded lekanis, on the cover, a young nude male jockey riding a horse; on the reverse, a bounding winged female griffin. Apulia, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy. Ca. 340-330 BC. Maximum width: 8 in. (20.2 cm). The output and quality of the Greek colonial potters working in Apulia increased greatly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports fell off sharply. Apulian craftsmanship is an amalgamation of the Ionian (Athenian, Attic) conventions, and Doric (Western colonial Greek) styles, with a noticeable native Italian aesthetic. Formerly in a California private collection; previously Sotheby's, London, 1987.
