Egyptian Faience Amulet of Sekhmet

An ancient Egyptian turquoise faience head of Sekhmet, a fragment of a large amulet, wearing a solar disk with uraeus; the back with a molded relief of the head of Nefertum wearing a lotus with plume.

Late Period, ca. 700 - 30 BC.
Height: 2 3/8 in. (6 cm).

Sekhmet was a warrior goddess of Upper Egypt depicted as a lioness. She was also a solar deity, and was associated with different aspects of Hathor, Mut, and Bastet. She often wears a solar disk headdress, and uraeus which associates her with Wadjet and royalty.

Formerly in a French private collection; subsequently in a New York private collection.
