Apulian Xenon Ware Kantharos: Cerberus
An ancient Apulian Greek Xenon ware kantharos with lateral handles, on one side, the triple headed dog guardian of Hades, Cerberus; on the reverse, a hooded female possibly representing an Amazon. Apulia, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy. Ca. 350 - 340 BC. Height: 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm). Intact. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, so named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. Formerly in a New York private collection, acquired from Charles Ede Ltd., London, 1990.
