Roman Marble Silvanus

Roman Marble Silvanus

An ancient Roman marble statue of a young Silvanus with masses of long curly hair bound with a fillet. He is nude except for a goat skin (nebris) around his neck, filled with fruit, which he holds up with his left hand.

Ca. 2nd century AD.
Height: 18 1/2 in. (47 cm); with base: 24 in.

The name of the god in Latin literally means, â??of the woodsâ??. This woodland tutelary deity was a protector of the woods, fields and flocks. He was depicted as a youth in an animal skin bearing the fruit of the forest.
