An ancient Canaanite bronze bust from a statuette of the god Baal. He wears a pointed cap and a baldric across his chest.

Middle Bronze Age.
Ca. 2000-1500 BC.
Height: 2 7/8 in. (7 cm).

The ancient Canaanite god, Baal was a deity of war, bringer of the autumnal rains and suppressor of the destructive flood waters. He was depicted with a pointed cap or helmet, bare-chested with a kilt, and carrying a mace.

Formerly in the collection of Dr. Isidor Silbermann, 1960s; subsequently J. W. collection, Salem, Oregon.
