Egyptian Bronze Statuette of Osiris

An ancient Egyptian bronze statuette of the god Osiris, lord of the underworld. The mummiform figure wears the hedjet crown, a regal beard, and holds a crook and flail. On the reverse is a winged figure of Isis below a suspension loop.

Late Period, ca. 700-30 BC.
Height: 4 7/8 in. (12.5 cm).
Framed.

Osiris was one of the most important gods of the Egyptian pantheon. He was the lord of the underworld, god of the dead and their domain to the west. Osiris was also the god of the inundation of the Nile and consequently fertility and came to be seen as a protective deity over both the living and dead.

Formerly in the collection of Elmo Williams (1913 - 2015), film editor of the movie, Cleopatra, received as a gift in 1966 (base inscribed, "Elmo Williams, from your London Office Friends, May 1966; subsequently J. W. collection, Salem, Oregon.
