Attic Red-Figure Squat Lekythos

A ancient Attic Greek red-figure squat lekythos with a nude youthful Eros chasing a hare, his wings raised, flying to the right.

Athens, Attica.
Ca. 480 - 440 BC.
Height: 5 1/2 in. (14 cm).

The lekythos was used to hold olive oil in antiquity and was often left as a grave offering.

The Greek god Eros (Latin: Cupid) was the youthful personification of Love, and was usually depicted alongside Aphrodite.

Formerly a San Francisco private collection; previously in the collection of Prof. Hugo Munsterberg (1916-1995), New Paltz, New York, acquired from Royal-Athena Galleries, New York in 1966.
