Cypriot Bichrome Amphora

An ancient Cypriot bichrome amphora, the body painted with vertical vegetal motifs and concentric rings of brown glaze.

Cypro-Archaic II, Bichrome V.
Ca. 600-475 BC.
Height: 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm).
Intact.

Bichrome ware originated in early Iron Age Phoenicia and spread to Cyprus where it became for a time the dominant pottery style.

Cf. British Museum, inv. no. 1894,1101.248, excavated at Amathus, Cyprus.

Formerly in the J. S. collection, Pennsylvania; previously in an English private collection, acquired between 1950 - 1957.
