An ancient Roman limestone head of a woman, perhaps a priestess, her hair pulled back under a headdress over which is worn a veil.

Palmyra.
2nd - 3rd century AD.
Height: 15 in. (38.1 cm).

Cf. British Museum, inv. no. 1889,1012.1, a Palmyrene funerary relief with busts of a man and a woman; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, inv. no. M.82.77.2.

Formerly in a Connecticut private collection, acquired from Asfar Brothers, Beirut, Lebanon, May 15, 1971, accompanied by original receipt and shipping documents.
