An ancient Roman limestone male head with short croped hair and wide eyes, with a limestone pillar behind.

Palmyra.
2nd - 3rd century AD.
Height: 12 in. (30.5 cm).

Cf. British Museum, inv. no. 1889,1012.1, a Palmyrene funerary relief with busts of a man and a woman.

Formerly in a Connecticut private collection, acquired from Asfar Brothers, Beirut, Lebanon, May 15, 1971, accompanied by original receipt and shipping documents.
