Sarmatian Gold and Carnelian Earrings
A pair of ancient Sarmatian earrings, each with two gold panels, one depicting a bird and the other a Maltese cross, and three carnelian beads suspended below.
Ca. 1st - 4th century AD.
The Sarmatians were a nomadic people who dominated the Northern Black Sea region from the 1st-4th centuries AD. Although they did not found stationary settlements, numerous burial sites have been discovered across the region. The Sarmatians buried their dead with jewelry and other possessions, and these earrings were likely part of a wealthy woman's burial attire.
