Sarmatian Gold and Garnet Diadem
A Sarmatian gold and garnet diadem. Sheet gold wrapped around a base metal core, with inlaid garnets.
Ca. 1st-4th century AD.
The Sarmatians were a nomadic people who dominated the Northern Black Sea region from the 1st-4th centuries AD. Although they did not found stationary settlements, numerous burial sites have been discovered across the region. The Sarmatians buried their dead with jewelry and other possessions, and this pendant was likely part of a wealthy woman's burial attire.
Formerly in a New York private collection.
