Egyptian Steatite Lion Amulet
An ancient Egyptian steatite amulet in the form of a recumbent lion on an integral base. Late Period, ca. 700-30 BC. Length: 1 in. (2.5 cm). Egyptian amulets representing animals were associated with specific deities. The lion was a symbol of Sekhmet, the Egyptian war goddess. Cf. another steatite example in the Liverpool National Museum, inv. no. 20.9.77.10. Formerly in a New York private collection, acquired at Hotel Drouot, Pescheteau-Badin-Ferrien, Paris, February 10, 1991; previously in French private collection.
