Roman Lagynos with Dionysiac Scene

An ancient Roman pottery Lagynos, a wine pitcher, mold-made with a Dionysiac scene on the shoulder in which Dionysus reclines leaning on a Satyr with Silenos before him. On each side draped Meanads cavort. The neck is in the form of the head of a meanad with ivy and berries in her hair.

Ca. 1st - 2nd century AD.
Height: 7 1/4 in. (18.4 cm).
Intact.

Formerly in the collection of professor and Mrs. Sid Port, acquired Superior Galleries, Fine Antiquities auction, June 9, 1993, lot 333; subsequently, Christie's, New York, June 12, 2002, lot 212.
