A Pre-Columbian large Cocle ceramic pedestal plate painted with an abstract image of a sawfish shark in red and ochre on a cream background.

Ca. 800-1200 AD.
Diameter: 10 1/2 in. (26.5 cm).

The pottery of the Cocle culture of Pre-Columbian Panama is defined by its bold contrasting palette of cream, ochre, and black which was employed to decorate vessels with complicated abstract representations of insects, animals, birds, and reptiles.

Formerly in a New York private collection.
