Octavian, the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, rose to prominence following Caesar's death. With his defeat of Antony at Actium he emerged victorious. He was declared Augustus in 27 BC, the first Roman Emperor, and later divus after his death in 14 AD by Tiberius, his adoptive son and successor.
