Greek Bronze Helmet Cheek Pieces: Griffin

A pair of fragmentary ancient Greek bronze cheek pieces from a helmet of the Chalcidian or Attic type. The right cheek piece is decorated in fine repoussé work with a rearing griffin, the left with a panther or lion.

Ca. 400-300 BC.
Height: 5 in. (13 cm).

Confer for a Chalcidian helmet with similar cheek pieces, only with sphinxes: Musée du Louvre, Paris, France, inv. no. BR1107; also, Ceccanti Collection, Florence, Italy, no. CC451.

Formerly in an English private collection, Surrey, 1970s.
