Attic Red-Figure Squat Lekythos

A ancient Attic Greek red-figure squat lekythos with a nude youthful Eros bearing a casket, his wings raised, flying to the right.

Athens, Attica.
Ca. 480-440 BC.
Height: 5 1/8 in. (14.2 cm).

The lekythos was used to hold olive oil in antiquity and was often left as a grave offering.

The Greek god Eros (Latin: Cupid) was the youthful personification of Love, and was usually depicted alongside Aphrodite.

Formerly in a New York estate, acquired in the 1960's.
