Egyptian Feldspar Sokaris Amulet
An ancient Egyptian green feldspar amulet of a seated falcon-headed god, likely Sokaris. Late Period, ca. 700 - 30 BC. Height: 7/8 in. (2.3 cm). Falcon headed deities without specific headdresses are difficult to attribute. They may represent Osiris, Horus, or Re-Horakhty. Carol Andrews, in her book on Egyptian amulets, suggests that this seated type may represent Sokaris, the long established funerary god of the necropolis of Saqqara.
Feldspar, mined in the Libyan desert, was one of the six stones most prized by the ancient Egyptians. It's green color made it symbolic of life. cf.: C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, (Texas, 1994), p. 14, fig. 8c. Formerly in a California private collection, acquired in the 1970's.
